Providing Environmental Science & Natural Resource Classes for Home School Families
Environmental science and natural resources are the main focus of our classes. We meet on Wednesdays from 9am-1pm.
Students have the opportunity to apply classroom learning through participation in various career and leadership development events on local, county, regional, state, and national levels.
We offer homeschoolers the opportunity to be a part of the National FFA Organization. We have chapter meetings the 1st Wednesday of the month from 1:30-3:00pm.
In addition to developing strong study and organizational skills, students develop critical thinking , cooperative problem solving, and decision making skills related to the protection management and wise use of our natural resources.
Topics of study are geared towards students who have a genuine desire and passion to learn more about the natural environment and how they can be stewards of the the resources we have been given.
In addition to strong organizational and study skills, students develop critical thinking, cooperative problem solving, and decision making skills related to the protection, management, and wise use of our natural resources.
Students in 6th -12th grade are given the opportunity to develop valuable leadership and career development skills though participation in competitions, conferences, and other activities offered by the FFA. Students gain self confidence and learn the value of team work. Some of the ways student have done this is through competitions such as public speaking, parliamentary procedure, job interview, land judging, forestry judging, and the environmental and natural resources competition, Students also are encouraged to participate in community service events such as manning interpretive displays at fairs, helping with events at a local nursing home, and using their talents and abilities to raise funds for a scholarship in memory of a former student.
Through regular classroom interaction as well as participation in FFA and other class sponsored extracurricular activities, students form close friendships that are invaluable. High Rock becomes a second family for many students. It is safe place for them to grow and share life experiences in a supportive environment. Because of the closeness shared, students hold each other accountable. They encourage each other to make wise choices and give their best.
Through participation in FFA Events, the Envirothon, community service, and other extracurricular opportunities we provide, students can develop a strong resume and show their ability to be successful in academic and extracurricular events that include students from public, private, charter, and home schools. This is often an area where many traditional home school students fall short because of limited opportunities. In addition to helping students build their resume, we seek and offer direct opportunities for our students to earn scholarships. Students have successfully earned scholarships ranging from $500 to $2000, with some students earning multiple scholarships. Active participation in events has also indirectly impacted scholarships earned by many students by strengthening their resumes. We have alumni that have received prestigious scholarships such as the NCSU Park Scholarship, the General Hugh Shelton National Leadership Scholarship, the Elk MVS Scholarship, and the Careers in Conservation Scholarship.
Students develop interactive booths that share information with fair goers about natural resources and agriculture!
Includes: Creed, Prepared, Extemporaneous, and Job Interview
Alicia was a part of our program for eight years. She lived life to the fullest and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Students use their time and talents to fund a college scholarship for a female student in Nicaragua.
